India lives in its myriad villages. Despite considerable progress in all fronts, nearly two-thirds
of Indian populace live in the rural areas and a significant portion of them are poor and
landless labourers. They are the most vulnerable section to poverty and access to
development. According to a 2005 World Bank estimate, India is home to a third of the
worlds. poor and 41.6% of the total Indian population falls below the international poverty line
of US$ 1.25 a day. An intervention with planned development strategies would help free
millions of rural poor from the age-old trap of Poverty and impoverishment.
Society for Community Action Network-India {SCAN-INDIA} came into existence in the
year 1995 in Chittoor, a small town in the state of Andhra Pradesh in South India. Chittoor
lies on the southeastern border halfway between Chennai and Bangalore. SCAN is a registered
non-profit, humanitarian organization working among the poor and the underprivileged and is
duly recognized by the ministry of revenue and the ministry of home affairs, Government of
India.
